Gus Varland Recalled, Ryan Brasier Placed On 15-Day Injured List
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled Gus Varland from Triple-A Oklahoma City and placed Ryan Brasier on the 15-day injured list with a right calf strain, retroactive to April 28.

Varland returns for his third stint with the club, first making the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster for the Seoul Series and made one appearance before getting optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City prior to the Dodger Stadium opener.

He was recalled on April 6 but sent back to OKC two days later. He joined the Dodgers on their road trip ahead of the series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays as part of the taxi squad, but was not activated.

Varland has posted a 13.50 ERA in two games with the club. He has made 18 Major League appearances in two seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers (2023) and Dodgers (2023-24), going 1-1 with a 6.86 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 20 innings.

He made nine appearances for Oklahoma City, going 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 10.2 innings. Varland last pitched for the Dodgers’ top Minor League affiliate on April 25.

He was originally drafted by the A’s in the 14th round of the 2018 First Year Player Draft out of Concordia University. The Dodgers lost Varland in the Rule 5 Draft to the Brewers last year, but he was later returned to the organization after being designated for assignment and clearing waivers.

Brasier appeared in 12 games for the Dodgers, striking out 12 batters in 11.2 innings with a 4.63 ERA. The 36-year-old was struggling to begin the year, but seemed to settle into his role recently.

He is in his second season with the Dodgers and he is a combined 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA in 51 games. The Texas native has been in the Majors parts of eight seasons with the Los Angeles Angles (2013), Boston Red Sox (2018-2023) and Dodgers (2023-24), going a combined 9-8 with a 3.91 ERA and 10 saves.

He signed a two-year contract with the Dodgers on February 8, 2024.
